I've seen the other threads on script history and that its a FIXED size... why can't script history also be written to a JSON file?

Considering that this file is likely to become very large (for example db.xxxx.insert, and then paste a large JSON text), we did not save it in JSON format

Then compress it into chunks - it’s just text - if people are willing to sacrifice the disk space why not allow users?
